03/07/2015 Donne on Love and Death Downtown

City of Toronto All Events http://ift.tt/1zhUiHQ The singular poetry of John Donne (1572-1631) inspired some of the greatest composers of England's Jacobean era. Seth Lerer, distinguished English scholar and author of "Prospero's Son" and "Inventing English: A Portable History of the Language", reads poetry by Donne. Soprano Hallie Fishel & lutenist John Edwards perform works by Campion, Dowland and others inspired by the poetry. The writing of Donne, a leading "Metaphysical Poet", ranges from the erotic to the deeply religious, satirical to searching.
