Eschewing crime & the fugitive theme, the film features an escalating love triangle between a fairground boxer, his lover & a boxing rival, with the characters caught in a paradoxical tug of war of love and career. Modern day audiences need only to view the stunning montages and ingenious use of dissolve, the classic cinematic transition of time and place that has since become widely used, to appreciate the pioneering qualities of his work. This screening will utilize the BFI-commissioned recording of a new score.
