11/09/2014 00:00:00 Manon Downtown
City of Toronto All Events http://ift.tt/1zkWRxZ A ballet given over to the sort of rough, earthy sensuality and social realism that derives more from the world of verismo opera than the conventions of narrative dance, Manon dispenses with the mythical, the idealized and the allegorized and works instead with a story grounded in a specific historical context and with characters who are propelled by such ignoble but deeply human motivations as avarice and lust. Sir Kenneth MacMillan's characters are complex and real, suffused in ambiguity, rather than purely symbolic.

11/08/2014 The Hitchcock 9: The Ring Southeast $10 - $19
City of Toronto All Events http://ift.tt/104wf4S The explosive hard-driving The Ring (1927), which was raved about by French New Wave masters Rohmer, Chabrol & Truffaut, is Hitchcock's only original screenplay. Eschewing crime & the fugitive theme, the film features an escalating love triangle between a fairground boxer, his lover & a boxing rival, with the characters caught in a paradoxical tug of war of love and career. Modern day audiences need only to view the stunning montages and ingenious use of dissolve, the classic cinematic transition of time and place that has since become widely used, to appreciate the pioneering qualities of his work. This screening will utilize the BFI-commissioned recording of a new score.
11/08/2014 The Hitchcock 9: The Farmer's Wife Southeast $10 - $19
City of Toronto All Events http://ift.tt/1p4tBbr It's the battle of the sexes as Hitchcock dips his toes into comedy. An irascible widowed farmer decides to marry again. With the aid of his faithful housekeeper he draws up a list of all the eligible women in the area, and goes wooing each in turn, with predictably disastrous results. The humiliating rejections finally strip the widower of his self-defeating pride & allow him to find the gal that's right for him. A romantic comedy in a rural setting is about as far as you can get from a "typical" Hitchcock. Despite that, it's a subtle film & one of his most enjoyable early works, with good performances, superior settings, lovely locations & the kind of gentle humour & farce, beloved of British audiences. Live accompaniment by Bill O'Meara

11/08/2014 00:00:00 Blake Ward Just Beneath the Surface Central West Free
City of Toronto All Events http://ift.tt/1p4tA7i Blake Ward's contemporary work builds on the techniques of classical figurative sculpture used since antiquity. His latest series Just Beneath the Surface crosses into abstract and ethereal realms where he creates stimulating figures that expand the consciousness of our inner realities. Their perfect proportions break away from all the fundamental rules of bronze sculpture, catapulting this medium into the 21st century. Ward's provocative, partial bronze figures with disappearing bodies are academic and classical, florid and baroque and freshly contemporary in form and spirit.

11/08/2014 00:00:00 Abstractus: Transcendental Mechanisms for Intuitive Logic Central West Free
City of Toronto All Events http://ift.tt/104wcWC Abstractus' method of work consists of a process of observation, analysis and "harvesting" of ideas, situations, scenarios and possibilities in different parts of the world; to reinterpret and finally create a piece of art... affecting as many people as we can, in a positive way to raise awareness about the impact of our own existence, [effectively making] a contribution by offering a place for contemplation, reflection and analysis. A final canvas may have been borne from a sculpture, public installation or performance piece, which is then photographed, painted over, etched out or recreated in a mixed media painting, often of several canvases. For Abstractus, the process of creation is as much a work of art as the created object itself.

11/07/2014 The Hitchcock 9: Champagne Southeast $10 - $19
City of Toronto All Events http://ift.tt/1xCHfBx Bubbling with giggly comedic timing, Champagne is not just a lighthearted affair: it's a first glimpse at the robust elements of Hitchcock's trademark style. Reflective surfaces: mirrors, chandeliers, window and a champagne glass, allow for metaphorical extensions in double visions, see-through scenes, or apparitions. A father tries to teach his frivolous heiress daughter a lesson and feigns bankruptcy. Adding to the mix is a mysterious man's voyeuristic observation from behind the glass, reminiscent of scenes in North by Northwest. With a useful measure of visual distortions & stylistic quirks, Champagne offers a world of make-believe combined with social humour. Accomplished silent film accompanist William O'Meara will play live.
