11/10/2016 Lucie & Thornton Blackburn Centre Grand Opening Central East Free

City of Toronto All Events http://ift.tt/2fp6Tfq Lucie and Thornton Blackburn were Canadian pioneers who made immeasurable contributions to the development of Toronto and initiatives of Black freedom in Canada. Fugitives of slavery, the Blackburns escaped to Upper Canada (now Toronto) in the 1830's where they became active leaders in the Black Canadian community, established the Toronto's first taxi company and set the precedent for Canada's first extradition policy, still used today. Join us for the grand opening of The Lucie & Thornton Blackburn Centre and commemorate their remarkable contributions to Toronto's history. This symposium will include an archaeological exhibit, theatrical play, intriguing panel discussion and the opportunity to meet local artists, authors and historians!
