Scott Gabriel has arranged a new score for a cabaret band. Projected photography and film stand in for the original production's ballet. Silent film-style title cards will translate the German text and explain the off-stage drama. Stephanie Conn sings the role of Anna on stage, and acts as Anna II in the pre-taped footage. Brecht's libretto explores themes of greed, corruption, self-deception, abuse of power and moral flexibility with an ironic voice that seems remarkably up-to-date. It is also uniquely suited for modern attention spans, as it runs just 50 minutes.
