To honour this milestone, the Fisher Library is holding an exhibition that explores the rich printed history of Shakespeare, and features the only Canadian-held copy of the celebrated 1623 First Folio on display. With almost 60 books on display - running chronologically from 1548 to 2010 - the exhibition features early source material such as Holinshed's Chronicles (1587) and Plutarch's Lives (1579) along with a range of Renaissance genres and forms, from maps to bibles to works of poetry, anatomy and heraldry. Later editions of Shakespeare and experiments with his works will also be prominently featured in the exhibition and accompanying catalogue.

Featuring over 200 works, the exhibition includes photographs by Diane Arbus, Garry Winogrand, Danny Lyon, Nan Goldin, the anonymous visitors of Casa Susanna and experimental films by Kenneth Anger, Marie Menken, Shirley Clarke, Robert Frank and Alfred Leslie. These images portray musicians, protesters, cross-dressers, bike gangs, politicians and socialites, individuals both at odds and united, against a backdrop of rapid social change.

From the hidden anti-Soviet surveillance infrastructures of the Cold War in Berlin and Beijing respectively to near-identical subway cars with awe-inspiring photographs of the “dear leaders” and a Microsoft commercial announcing the availability of new security updates in Pyongyang and Berlin respectively, it seems that we are living in an information society where the more we see, the less we know.
